SLJ Kick Start: Cicadas in Art

Today, I did a task in which I made a drawing of a cicada on paper.

First, I read this article about cicadas exoskeletons and learnt about invertebrates.

Second, I watched this video about cicada moulting and watched this video about cicada exoskeleton.

Third, I decided to make a drawing of a cicada instead of collecting the skins because I couldn't find any.

Fourth, I read this article so that I get an idea of how and what I am about to draw.

Next, I gathered a piece of paper, coloured pencils, sketch pens, pencil, sharpener and eraser.

Then, I drew my cicada on paper but it was too hard so I found an easier version to draw.

Lastly, I took a picture of my artwork and added it to my blog post so that I can share my work.

I learnt that cicada wings inflate and expand so that their new skin can harden and in that process, they shed their old exoskeleton skin.

An interesting fact is that an exoskeleton supports and protects an animal's body from outside. Many invertebrate animals (that do not have bones) have exoskeletons to protect their inner body.

I liked doing this Summer Learning Journey task because learnt how to draw a cicada and gain more knowledge about it.

It is me Quein again a blog commenter for the Manaiakalani Summer Learning Journey. WOW!!! It looks amazing, I really enjoyed the cicada that you have taken the time to draw and color in. It is really good to hear that you read the article and did some research to get some ideas on how to draw the cicada. The drawing has definitely brightened up my morning. I really enjoyed the step by step instruction and expansion of the task. It is Great to see your methodical thought process. I have really been impressed by your work ethic during SLJ- Ka Pai!!!!

Cicadas are super loud, and are found everywhere in the world. Their rhythm is so mysterious but sometimes it does sound relaxing. Have you seen Cicadas or heard Cicadas before? What do you think about them?

Keep up the Super work we look forward to your next blog post!!!

    Have a Super Summer!!!

    1. Kia ora Quein,

Thank you for commenting on my blog post and the feedback too.
Yes, cicadas are super loud but yea they are relaxing too.
I hear cicadas everytime when I go outside. I haven't see one before because they always hide in the long grass or they camouflage with the tree.
But I saw cicadas in the videos and articles from this task.
I think that cicadas are amazing! They just become too loud at times.
What do you like about cicadas? What so you not like about cicadas?

      Thank you so much!
I am looking forward to your reply.

Thank you for your awesome and very thoughtful replies. We really appreciate it. Yeah especially in summertime you can hear a lot of cicadas. They are found on nearly every continent. I like the sound that they can make but only when there are a few of them. As too many of them can be too loud.

Keep up the Super work we look forward to your next blog post!!!

      Have a Super Summer!!!
